SPOTLIGHT ON MYANMAR CULTURE

The Myanmar community in Malaysia came together recently for the “Fundraising Event for Kachin Refugees and Internally Displaced Person” at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

The event, organised by Coalition of Burma Ethnics, Malaysia (Cobem), is to contribute the Malaysia Karen Organi-sation, Kachin Refugee Committee, Chin Refugee Committee and Organisation of Karenni Development.

Members of the Kachin and other Myanmar ethnic groups turned up in droves as the crowd was duly entertained with cultural performances such as the Kayan Padawng liwn Mo dance, Mon students modelling show and culture shows.

An estimated crowd of over 1,500 packed hall to its rafter.

Getting the message across : The Karenni ethnic group, famous for their distinctive bangles, performing a dance that sends the message of unity.
Sarah Devaraj of Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram), Katrina Jorene Maliamauv of Tenaganita and international exchange students from Australia were there as well.

“It is important and meaningful to witness people from various ethnic groups come together and show support for a common cause.

“It is indeed an inspiring and incredible sight. You are not alone, we are here with you,” said Katrina.

Kachin Refugee Committee Assistant Coordinator Ring John said, “We hope the event will raise the general public’s awareness on the sufferings of Myanmar refugees and all donations are greatly appreciated”.
