[BLDC Chiangmai2009] Scholarships and Call for Applications Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific)
Applications are now being accepted for study and for scholarships in the Master of Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) (MHRD).
The MHRD is a unique Master degree program in which students undertake a foundational semester of study at the University of Sydney, and then a second semester at one of the four partner universities:
§ Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia)
§ Mahidol University (Thailand)
§ Katmandu School of Law (Nepal)
§ University of Colombo (Sri Lanka)
Graduates of the course will gain an interdisciplinary understanding of human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific, and will have opportunities to research and examine the application of human rights and democratisation in the field with the partner institutions.
Course StructureIn the first semester at the University of Sydney, students will undertake a foundational course in social science, legal and political approaches to human rights and democratisation. During the second semester students will follow two core units of study complemented by either supervised research, an internship at an in-country organisation specialising in human rights/democratisation or undertake further specialised electives. Students must select one of the four partners universities listed above to undertake their second semester study.

Graduates will have both the ability to undertake independent scholarly research on current issues pertaining to human rights and democratisation in the Asia Pacific and skills to put their academic understanding and practical experience to use in real situations.
Potential Students
We are looking for people who have a strong commitment to or experience on working on issues about human rights and democratisation. The degree will strongly benefit people already working in, or seeking to work in the fields of human rights and democratisation in our region.
Through a combination of academic and practical educational experiences, the objective of the program is to produce graduates who can support ongoing efforts to strengthen institutions dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy and to enhance a regional culture of human rights and democracy. Recognising the critical institutional developments that are taking place both regionally and in particular countries during this time, the program has been set up to ensure that human rights and democracy advocates in the region are well resourced to lead us into the next decades.
Scholarships
Thirty scholarships, covering course fees and a living and travel allowance, will be offered to outstanding applicants from across the Asia Pacific region. This is made possible with the support of a significant grant from the European Commission.
Scholarships will be available to citizens of Asia Pacific countries (a full list of countries is available from the Academic Director upon request). The award of scholarships will be determined by academic qualifications and potential contribution to human rights and democratization.

Applications for the MHRD close on 30 April 2010 and are considered upon receipt.
Applications for the Human Rights and Democratisation Scholarship close on 12 March 2010.

[BLDC Chiangmai2009] Asia Leadership Fellow Program 2010
The International House of Japan and the Japan Foundation is currently accepting applications for the 2010 Asia Leadership Fellow Program (ALFP). The ALFP is an opportunity for individuals working in the civil society/NGO sector in Asia to gain increased professional understanding about related issues through workshops, seminars, the retreat meeting, field trips and the public symposium. The Program will be held in Tokyo, Japan for a period of nearly one month and has been scheduled from 12 September to 13 November 2010. The theme of the program is “Asia in Dialogue: Visions and Actions for a Humane Society.”
The fellowship includes a round trip airfare to and from Tokyo, daily allowance to cover accommodation, meals and other incidentals, medical insurance during the stay and other costs related to group activities such field trip and retreat.
Eligible candidates can be from Northeast-,Southeast-and South Asian countries and should be between the age group 35-59 years. Although it is not necessary to have a postgraduate degree, but the candidate should have a good command over English and should demonstrate outstanding leadership ability or potential in his/her profession.

The new program to replace OSI ICFC

The Exam Preparation Outreach Program is a new program created to serve those in Asia who have experience and an interest in developing their country and improving their community. We provide exam preparation for TOEFL, GED, IELTS and SAT free of charge for those involved in development. We would like to encourage anyone who has an interest to apply.
Exam Preparation Outreach Program is pleased to announce that applications are now available for the study period beginning in October. Fill out your application now if you plan to go to University in the fall of 2010. EPOP is a program that you can study while you work.

Attached to this email is the application which is a pdf that can be filled out with your computer and emailed (epop appX.pdf); an informative interactive pdf brochure that has helpful links to additional information (epop e-brochure.doc); and a black and white pdf brochure that can be easily printed out on 2 pages so that you don't waste paper (epop p-brochure). You must have adobe acrobat 7.0 or later to fill out the application online.

Korean Scholarship Opportunity
The May 18 Memorial Foundation Accepts Application for 2009 Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School
“I recognized that the power of small individuals could forge andunite in solidarity to bring about the constructive change to theworld. Eventually, Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School (GAHRFS)was a true moral blessing and encouragement to me” a reflection madeby Ms. Ratchada Arpornsilp, participant from Thailand 2007.
The May 18 Memorial Foundation is now accepting applications for the2009 Gwangju Asian Human Rights Folk School. This year, theapplication is being made more competitive to screen the number ofapplications. The emphasis is organizational partnership, soapplicants endorsed by their organization will be given priority.Since the foundation will not be able to provide multipletranslations, English language will be the medium for exchange.
The GAHRFS aims to contribute to the development of democracy andhuman rights throughout Asia. Twenty (20) participants will beselected from among applicants from all over Asia who have beenworking for human rights, peace and democracy. They will be given anopportunity to learn and experience the history and developmentprocess of human rights and democracy in Korea(S). The folk schoolwill also serve as an opportunity for participants to exchange andnetwork with other human rights activists.
One of the perks of attending the Folk School is the opportunity to beendorsed for a scholarship. For the last 3 years the foundation hasbeen supporting scholars at Sungkonghoe University studying for theirMaster of Arts in Inter-Asia NGO Studies (MAINS). They were chosen andselected by the folk school committee based on their activeparticipation and performance during the folk school.
Interested applicants should download the attached form. Applicantsare advised to read carefully the guidelines and the rules in orderfor their application to be considered. The foundation will onlyaccept and consider applicants who will properly comply with the setguidelines and rules.
Useful Information
This year the foundation will accept 20 applicants:
Junior Staff 8 (with 2-5 years experience)
Middle Management/Advisory 8 (with 5-15 years experience)
Senior/Director 4 (with more than 15 years experience)
Applicants should ensure that they have no potential visa problems. Ifan applicant is denied entry to Korea because of personal historywhich they did not disclose to the May 18 Memorial Foundation, thefoundation will absolutely not cover their travel expenses. This isthe applicant’s responsibility.
If an applicant later decides not to come to the folk school (cancelstheir application) after they have been selected, the May MemorialFoundation will not accept any applications from their organizationfor three years.
The May 18 Memorial Foundation will cover the following expenses:
l Visa fees
l International airfare to Korea
l Transportation in Korea
l NOTE: Internal airfares (in your country) will be covered ifyou can prove that the flight is necessary
The following expenses will NOT be covered:
l Internal transportation in your country (for example, to theairport or to the embassy)
l Official fees other than visa fees (for example, travel tax)
The selection committee may change your status if they believe youhave entered under the wrong category (for example, if you apply as asenior but have less than 15 years experience).
